Low Testosterone Guide: How It Is Diagnosed and What T-Booster Pills Show
Low testosterone means a total level under 300 ng/dL on two blood tests taken before noon, plus symptoms such as low sex drive, fatigue or lost muscle (Urology Care: Low testosterone). It affects about 2% of men overall and far more after 80. A 2020 review found only 24.8% of "T booster" ingredients had data showing a rise (Clemesha 2020: T-booster claims). SodaPeak is not a testosterone treatment.

Diagnosis
How is low testosterone diagnosed?
With two blood tests and a symptom check. The Urology Care Foundation, the patient arm of the American Urological Association, defines low testosterone as a total level below 300 ng/dL, confirmed on two separate tests taken before noon (Urology Care: Low testosterone).
Morning matters because testosterone is highest early in the day and falls by evening. One low afternoon reading can make a normal man look deficient. A second test guards against a one-off dip from illness, poor sleep or a hard week.
The numbers alone are not enough. A doctor also looks for symptoms. Only when both fit does the label "low T" apply.
Ask for a total testosterone test drawn before noon, and a repeat on another morning if the first is low. Bring a list of your medicines, since some can affect the result.
Symptoms
What are the symptoms of low testosterone, and what else causes them?
The classic signs are low sex drive, reduced erections, fatigue and loss of muscle (Urology Care: Low testosterone). Each one also has other common causes, which is why a blood test beats a guess.
| Symptom | Could be low T? | Other common causes |
|---|---|---|
| Low sex drive | Yes | Stress, depression, some antidepressants, relationship strain |
| Weaker erections | Yes | Narrowed arteries, diabetes, blood pressure drugs (NIDDK: ED symptoms & causes) |
| Fatigue | Yes | Short sleep, sleep apnea, thyroid trouble, anemia |
| Loss of muscle | Yes | Inactivity, low protein, aging, illness |
| Weight gain around the waist | Linked | Diet, inactivity; obesity itself is tied to lower T (Urology Care: Low testosterone) |
Our men's health guide explains why erection changes deserve a heart and blood-sugar check as well.
By the numbers
What are the key numbers for low testosterone?
How common
How common is low testosterone in men?
Less common than ads suggest: about 2.1% of men overall, according to the Urology Care Foundation (Urology Care: Low testosterone). The rate climbs with age, from around 1% of young men to as many as 50% of men over 80.
Low T is also tied to obesity and type 2 diabetes. That link runs both ways, and it is good news in one sense: the same source notes that weight loss and more physical activity may help raise low levels.
So a tired 45-year-old man is far more likely to be short on sleep, stressed or carrying extra weight than to have true low T. The test tells you which one it is. Be kind to yourself about weight; small, steady changes count.
T boosters
What do studies show about testosterone booster supplements?
Very little support. A 2020 review in the World Journal of Men's Health looked at 50 "T booster" products with 109 different ingredients. Nine in ten made a testosterone claim. Yet only 24.8% of the ingredients had any data showing an increase (Clemesha 2020: T-booster claims).
Data for a rise
About a quarter of ingredients had at least one study showing higher testosterone.
Data for a fall
Some ingredients had studies showing testosterone went down.
No change
Studies found no effect on testosterone either way.
No testosterone data
Most ingredients had never been tested for testosterone at all.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements reached a similar view for athletes. Tribulus did not change strength, lean mass or sex hormones in small trials, and DHEA at 100-150 mg a day for 8-12 weeks did not raise testosterone or strength in men (ODS: Exercise & performance supplements).
The same review found some products went over safe upper limits for zinc, niacin or magnesium. More is not always better.
Tongkat ali
How much did tongkat ali change testosterone in studies?
A little. In a 12-week trial of 105 men aged 50-70 with levels under 300 ng/dL, total testosterone rose 9% on 100 mg and 12.5% on 200 mg of a standardized extract, against a 3% fall on placebo, as summarized by the NIH's LiverTox (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). Free testosterone, the active portion, did not change.
Put in context, a 12.5% rise takes a man at 280 ng/dL to about 315. The men in the trial already had low T. They took a specific extract for only three months. LiverTox also notes a 2021 view from Europe's food safety agency: tongkat ali's safety "has not been established under any condition of use".
SodaPeak lists tongkat ali as raw root powder, second in its blend, so it is at most 600 mg per 2 capsules and probably much less. Raw powder is not the same thing as the standardized extract that was tested, so the trial result does not carry over to SodaPeak.
The rest of the blend
Do SodaPeak's other ingredients affect testosterone?
Not in any way shown in people, and one may work the other way. The blend is named "Test Boost", but the bottle makes no testosterone claim and no study of SodaPeak exists.
- Wild yam: the body does not turn it into DHEA or other hormones; that conversion happens only in a lab (RxList: Wild yam).
- Sarsaparilla: no plant contains testosterone, and the claim that its sterols become steroids is false, says RxList (RxList: Sarsaparilla).
- Boron: the NIH fact sheet reports no testosterone results at all (ODS: Boron).
- Saw palmetto: it blocks an enzyme that makes a strong form of testosterone, and Memorial Sloan Kettering lists lower libido as a side effect (MSK: Saw palmetto).
- Horny goat weed: its sexual use is traditional, and more studies are needed (MSK: Epimedium).
The full list, with ceilings for each, is on the ingredients page.
Treatment
How is confirmed low testosterone treated?
By a doctor, after the two-test diagnosis. The Urology Care Foundation says testosterone therapy should start only after a confirmed low level, and that weight loss and more activity may help on their own (Urology Care: Low testosterone).
Therapy needs a prescription and follow-up blood tests. A supplement is not a substitute for that plan.

When to see a doctor
When should I see a doctor about low testosterone?
See a doctor if low sex drive, weaker erections, fatigue or muscle loss last more than a few weeks. Chest pain, a racing heartbeat or fainting need care the same day.
Write down your symptoms
Note when they began and how often they happen.
Book a morning blood draw
Ask for total testosterone before noon, then a repeat if it is low.
Bring every bottle you take
Including SodaPeak; tongkat ali can interact with testosterone therapy and some prostate drugs (WebMD: Eurycoma longifolia).
Ask about the whole picture
Weight, sleep, blood sugar and medicines can all lower levels or mimic low T.
FAQ
Low testosterone guide FAQ
What testosterone level is considered low?
A total testosterone level below 300 ng/dL is considered low, per the Urology Care Foundation. It must be confirmed on two blood tests taken before noon, and you also need symptoms such as low sex drive, fatigue or loss of muscle.
Why should a testosterone test be done in the morning?
Testosterone peaks in the morning and drops through the day, so an afternoon test can read falsely low. Urology guidance calls for two tests taken before noon on different days to confirm a low result.
How common is low testosterone by age?
Low testosterone affects about 2.1% of men overall, rising from around 1% of young men to as many as 50% of men over 80, according to the Urology Care Foundation. Obesity and diabetes make it more likely.
Do testosterone booster pills actually work?
Mostly not, based on current data. A 2020 review of 50 booster products found only 24.8% of their ingredients had any study showing a testosterone rise, while 10.1% showed a fall. NIH reviews found tribulus and DHEA did not raise testosterone in men.
Can losing weight raise low testosterone?
It may. The Urology Care Foundation notes that low testosterone is linked to obesity and diabetes, and that weight loss and more physical activity may help. Ask your doctor to recheck your levels after a few months of steady change.
Does tongkat ali work for men with normal testosterone?
There is little evidence that it does. The main 12-week trial only enrolled men aged 50-70 with levels under 300 ng/dL, and the rises were small. WebMD notes any increases appear small and do not seem to improve physical performance.
Can SodaPeak replace testosterone therapy?
No. SodaPeak is not a testosterone treatment, makes no testosterone claim on its label, and has never been studied. Testosterone therapy is a prescription treatment for low levels confirmed by two morning blood tests, with follow-up tests from a doctor.
