Ingredient 2 of 8
Tongkat Ali in SodaPeak: How Much Is There and What the Trials Found
Tongkat ali root powder is second of eight ingredients in SodaPeak's 1,200 mg blend, so it weighs at most 600 mg per 2 capsules, and likely far less. In a 12-week trial of 105 men aged 50 to 70 with low testosterone, standardized extract raised total levels 9 to 12.5% (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). SodaPeak itself has never been tested.

The basics
What is tongkat ali?
Tongkat ali is a shrub from the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Its scientific name is Eurycoma longifolia, and the root is the part people use.
In Malaysia and Indonesia the root has a long history as a folk tonic for men. Today it is sold for energy, sex drive and testosterone, usually as a water extract. SodaPeak's label lists "Tongkat Ali Powder (Eurycoma Longifolia Jack) Root", which reads as ground root rather than an extract.
That detail matters. Most trials used extracts made to a set strength, and raw powder is not the same thing gram for gram.
| Label name | Tongkat Ali Powder (Eurycoma Longifolia Jack) Root |
|---|---|
| What it is | Eurycoma longifolia root · Root powder |
| Position on the label | 2 of 8 in the blend (labels list blend ingredients from most to least by weight) |
| Amount per serving (2 capsules) | Not disclosed; at most 600 mg by label math |
| Amount used in research | 100-400 mg a day of standardized extract, 6-12 weeks |
| Strength of evidence | Small, short studies |
| Why it is used | Southeast Asian root studied for testosterone in older men |
| Main caution | Long-term safety not established; some products contained heavy metals or hidden drugs. |
Label math
How much tongkat ali is in SodaPeak?
The label does not print an amount. Tongkat ali sits second in the 1,200 mg Test Boost blend, and FDA rules list blend ingredients by weight, heaviest first (FDA labeling guide ch. IV (blends)). So it can weigh no more than half the blend: at most 600 mg per 2 capsules.
That is a ceiling, not a measured amount. If horny goat weed takes a large share, tongkat ali gets less. Six smaller ingredients also need room inside the same 1,200 mg.
| Daily dose | Blend weight | Tongkat ali, at most | Form |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 capsule | 600 mg | 300 mg | Root powder |
| 2 capsules (one serving) | 1,200 mg | 600 mg | Root powder |

The evidence
What did the main tongkat ali trial find?
It found small rises in total testosterone in older men who already had low levels. LiverTox, an NIH resource, summarizes a 2021 trial of 105 men aged 50 to 70 with testosterone under 300 ng/dL (LiverTox: Tongkat ali).
Over 12 weeks, total testosterone rose 9% on 100 mg of extract and 12.5% on 200 mg. It fell 3% on placebo. Free testosterone, the active form, did not change. Neither did SHBG, a protein that carries the hormone in blood.
- Who
105 men aged 50 to 70, testosterone below 300 ng/dL (LiverTox: Tongkat ali).
- What
100 mg or 200 mg of standardized extract a day, or placebo.
- How long
12 weeks.
- Result
Total testosterone up 9% and 12.5%; free testosterone unchanged; no clear athletic benefit.
WebMD sums it up the same way: any rises look small and do not seem to help physical performance (WebMD: Eurycoma longifolia). Operation Supplement Safety, a Department of Defense program, says studies are small and short and more evidence is needed (OPSS: Tongkat ali).
Side by side
How does SodaPeak's tongkat ali compare with trial doses?
The ceiling is higher than trial doses, but the form is different, so the numbers do not line up. LiverTox gives a traditional range of 100 to 400 mg a day (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). Trials gave a standardized extract, while SodaPeak lists root powder with no strength stated.
| Measure | SodaPeak (2 capsules) | Research |
|---|---|---|
| Amount per day | at most 600 mg, not printed | 100 to 400 mg |
| Form | Root powder | Standardized root extract |
| Strength stated | Not published | Set by the extract maker |
| Length of use | Open-ended | 6 to 12 weeks |
| Tested as a product | Not published | Tongkat ali alone |
A milligram of extract can hold many times the active compounds of a milligram of powder. So even 600 mg of powder may not match 200 mg of extract. Without a printed amount, there is no way to know.
Testosterone
Will the tongkat ali in SodaPeak fix low testosterone?
No one can say it will, because no study tested SodaPeak and its dose is unknown. The bottle itself never mentions testosterone; "Supports healthy muscle" is all it promises.
The Urology Care Foundation says low testosterone means two morning blood tests under 300 ng/dL plus symptoms (Urology Care: Low testosterone). A 9 to 12.5% rise from a low starting point may still leave a man in that range. Real low testosterone deserves a diagnosis and a treatment plan with a doctor.
Low sex drive, weaker erections, tiredness and muscle loss can come from low testosterone, diabetes, sleep problems or medicines. A blood test before noon is the place to start. Our low testosterone guide explains what to ask.
Safety
Is tongkat ali safe to take?
Short-term side effects look uncommon, but long-term safety is not established. LiverTox lists nausea, diarrhea, headache and rash, and reports one case of liver injury in a 47-year-old bodybuilder (LiverTox: Tongkat ali). In 2021, Europe's food safety agency said its safety "has not been established under any condition of use", citing a concern about DNA damage.
- Contamination: OPSS says some tongkat ali products contained lead or mercury, or the ED drug sildenafil (OPSS: Tongkat ali).
- Medicines: WebMD lists interactions with testosterone, propranolol and prostate-cancer drugs such as enzalutamide (WebMD: Eurycoma longifolia).
- Conditions: talk to a provider first with prostate problems, a cancer history, or heart-rhythm, kidney or liver problems (WebMD: Eurycoma longifolia).
Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, belly pain or unusual tiredness after starting any supplement need a doctor. Stop the capsules and bring the bottle.

Our take
Is the tongkat ali in SodaPeak worth it?
It is the most promising ingredient on the label, and still a weak reason to buy. The research is small and short, the trial results were modest, and SodaPeak uses an undisclosed amount of powder rather than a tested extract.
In its favor
- A real placebo-controlled trial in older men
- Second on the label, so a meaningful share
- Few short-term side effects reported
Against it
- Root powder, not the extract used in trials
- No amount or strength printed
- Long-term safety not established

FAQ
Tongkat ali in SodaPeak: common questions
What does tongkat ali do to testosterone levels?
In one 12-week trial, tongkat ali extract raised total testosterone by 9 to 12.5% in men aged 50 to 70 with low levels, while placebo fell 3%. Free testosterone did not change. WebMD calls the increases small. No study has tested the tongkat ali in SodaPeak.
How much tongkat ali should you take a day?
Research and traditional use fall between 100 and 400 mg a day, according to LiverTox. Trials used standardized extracts for 6 to 12 weeks. SodaPeak holds at most 600 mg of root powder per 2 capsules, and the real amount is not printed.
Is tongkat ali the same as tongkat ali extract?
No. Tongkat ali powder is ground root, while an extract concentrates the root's compounds to a set strength. Trials used extracts. SodaPeak's label lists root powder, so its strength cannot be compared directly with study doses.
How long does tongkat ali take to work?
The main trial measured results after 12 weeks, and others ran 6 to 12 weeks. That is longer than SodaPeak's 30-day eBay return window. No study has measured how long SodaPeak takes, so track how you feel and see a doctor for ongoing symptoms.
Can tongkat ali hurt your liver?
Liver injury from tongkat ali is rare but reported. LiverTox describes one case in a 47-year-old bodybuilder and rates it in category D, a possible but rare cause. Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain after starting it need a doctor.
Who should not take tongkat ali?
Men on testosterone therapy, propranolol or prostate-cancer drugs should not take tongkat ali without their doctor's approval, according to WebMD. So should anyone with prostate problems, a cancer history, or heart-rhythm, kidney or liver disease.
Why do some tongkat ali products fail testing?
Some tongkat ali products have been found with heavy metals such as lead or mercury, or with hidden sildenafil, according to Operation Supplement Safety. It advises looking for independent third-party testing. SodaPeak publishes no third-party lab report.
